Overview
The Megger 569001-KIT Ultrasonic Leak and Corona Detector is a low-cost, portable system that receives air-borne ultrasonic signals, converts them to the audible range, amplifies them and displays the output visibly on a meter and audibly through a speaker or headset. It is designed for locating gas leaks and electrical corona sources, both of which emit strong ultrasonic signals that are inaudible to the unaided human ear.
Because the instrument responds only to ultrasound, it stays insensitive to high ambient audible noise levels, so surveys can continue with machinery running. Variously shaped collectors speed up source location: the directional pickup horn with peep sight and pistol-grip handle pinpoints discharges in high-voltage equipment while the operator remains at a safe distance, and the sound concentrator narrows the search close to a source. The kit comprises the instrument with indicator and speaker, a plug-in ultrasonic transducer probe on a 5.5 ft retractable cable, the directional horn, the sound concentrator, an 8-ohm headset and a carrying case. Solid-state circuitry runs from a single 9-volt battery, and the companion 569001-7 ultrasonic tone generator places a 40 kHz signal inside tanks and sealed volumes for leak testing.
